you know, sometimes i am on websites like sparkpeople.com and i read of people who are like "i eat 1000-1200 calories per day and i run 4 miles a day and i am still 120 lbs and 5 foot 2. " this makes no sense to me. either they are miscounting their calories or they skip running or something. this goes against thermodynamics.

Night picnics are the fun! The wine I bought from the vineyard, and some of the jam I made from strawberry picking. It turned out really well actually, I was a bit surprised. I usually don't put jam on anything, the ones they sell at the grocery store are too sweet and have a funny consistency. My jam has maybe 2 tablespoons of brown sugar (I'm not sure exactly, I never measure), lemon juice and strawberries. Some of the recipes I looked at called for 4 cups of sugar. What the fuck. Strawberries are already naturally sweet, why do you wanna go ruin the flavour by adding sugar? But honestly it's the best jam I've ever had. Very refreshing.
This reminds me of the study done on a Papua New Guinea tribe, whose population have no trace of acne. They think it's because they don't consume any processed sugar. Which makes sense. If it doesnt come from the earth we're not meant to be eating it. That's why our skin reacts badly.

Anyone know a physical shop in Melbourne I can buy a pocketwatch chain? I'm googling and can only find ebay stores. Bonus points for being in the CBD.

This is an old one from my boyfriend's first-year Russian class (four years ago). In this particular tute, they were practicing using different verbs. The verb under discussion was the verb 'to have', which in Russian relates to two things - tangible things and intangible things (like feelings/emotions). If you use the intangible version for tangible things, it basically means to screw that thing.
One unfortunate person: "I have a mum, I have a sister, I have a dog...." Russian teacher *horrified boggle*
Instant student folklore.

We went strawberry picking and she held Ben's hand up and down the strawberry fields, she's so funny. This past weekend just exhausted me. Late nights and early morning outings - I'm catching up on my rest by not leaving the house today, it's chores day. I'm gonna do some laundry then head out later tonight for our dance class.

I have a funny story about this shirt. My mom and my sister went to Boston for a July 4th parade with this Filipino organization they're with. She always buys us clothes when she goes on trips, my mom has impeccable taste when it comes to shopping for us. This time though I think she went too far. She bought Ben this baby pink polo shirt and he recoiled. We laughed about it for hours.
me: He's just being polite, he's not gonna wear that mom.
mom: What? No, it's trendy. Guys wear pink shirts now.
ben: Um, maybe guys in a different line of work.
mom: Maybe give it to Tom.
sister: He won't wear that either.
mom: You're all losers, it's such a nice shirt. And I looked all over for your size. Took me a long time to find that shirt and you're making fun of it.
ben: *feeling guilty* Oh, it's amazing! It's a beautiful shirt, Nanette, wow I love it so much. *gives her an exaggerated appreciative hug*
me: Hahaha.
mom: I hate you.
ben: I love you.
So in the end we still took home the pink polo shirt but my mom gave him this grey shirt so that she could feel she brought him a gift. It's very ill-fitting, he can't raise his arms up. It's intended for someone else, it's a size M and he's an XL. He wears it anyway to make my mom happy.

My little cousin wore these silly sandal strappy shoes to the farm. She got splinters walking through the field which I then had to painstakingly extract, so I just gave her my shoes. I went barefoot 'cause I hate strappy sandals. Shoes to me have to really comfortable - if they're even a little annoying I won't wear them, I'd rather walk around shoeless and get splinters. You know, like relationships. They have to really fit - if there's even one thing that doesn't work, I'd rather be single.

I wanna go on a roadtrip one day with a camera around my neck. And take drive-by photo shoots. I bet that would be fun.

Young coconut juice at Night Market. I was surprised to see people discard the coconut after they drank the juice. The best part is inside, you losers. I didn't wanna throw mine away so I brought it home, BK whacked it open with my sushi knife and I ate the meat.

Wine tasting at Niagara.

My friend Ayelet always wanted to go wine tasting so I went with her, not expecting to really get into it 'cause I'm not a big drinker, let alone a wine connoisseur. But whatever, I'm always willing to try new things. Our first vintner turned out to be one of the best in the Niagara area and I had a really good experience - the best wine I've ever had which isn't available at the liquor stores. I liked it so much we went to 2 more, much larger vineyards (almost a 4th but we got hungry) but it wasn't the same. The best was the first one we went to which was small but of higher quality, from my limited experience.
I didn't really get too drunk since they don't give you a whole glass and we walked around the vineyard afterward. She signed up for a membership so we made a deal that each time her wine arrives, we're gonna have a dinner party, and pair the wine with the food it goes with. Each shipment of wine comes with a littlte recipe you can follow. It's gonna be fun! We're such nerds!

This is a general question to the group. Does anyone here find that they are sensitive to certain vitamins? I am finding that I cannot take vitamins with a lot of zinc in them. For example, I had/have the flu and I know when I have been sick in the past, I will take a zinc vitamin or emergen-C or Airbourne for the extra vitamins (along wth my normal everyday vitamin) and within 30 minutes, I am cramping up and running to the bathroom for the next hour or so. Then I am fine.
I was reading somewhere that people with IBS sometimes have a zinc deficiency so this made me wonder about my reaction....maybe it is an allergy to zinc of some sorts.
Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this?

Posting on behalf of my boyfriend:
Software Developer Wanted
We're a Richmond-based software development studio specialising in web technologies such as Flex and Ruby on Rails. We are looking for a passionate and energetic developer to join our team of three.
We're more interested in what you can do than what you say you can do. So prove yourself with your attitude and with your code.
We're looking for someone who's spent their evenings and weekends working on their own projects, and has something to show for it. We have a particular love of open source collaboration, and you should too. Tell us about the projects you watch, and the projects you contribute to: do you have accounts with Github, SourceForge, or RubyForge?
We want to be floored by your enthusiasm to work with new products, programs, and languages. Dynamic or functional languages like Python, Ruby, Actionscript, Erlang, and Haskell are looked upon favorably. We're not interested in your academic transcript, your 2-day ScrumMaster black-belt, or your Microsoft certificates, but we are interested in real talent, sharp skills, and unmatched motivation.
If you're interested in working with us, send through your resume and examples of your pet projects to recruitment@silverpond.com.au.
Remuneration can be negotiated depending on experience.

Greetings Melbournians.
I've just started a new job in Fitzroy in Napier St (parallel to Brunswick). So what I've been doing is taking the train to Parliament station (I live out near Springvale, it's a bit of a hike...), then the 112 tram up Brunswick. As far as I can tell from the Metlink website, the 112 tram is the only one that gets me vaguely near my destination.
However!
I've also seen a Route 9 tram to Thornbury go past when I've been waiting at the Macarthur St tram stop outside Parliament station. I can't find information on this route anywhere on the Metlink website or on the little map thingies at each tram stop, and am just wondering if anyone knows anything about this route? Where does it go? What streets does it go down? Could this tram take me to my destination (cnr. Brunswick and Moor St)?
Can anyone solve the mystery of this un-advertised tram route?
Oh, and, lol, connex sucks.

I was wondering if anybody was interested in buying a TI-89 CAS calculator? It was bought at the start of the year brand new for around one hundred and eighty dollars, and has barely been used -- so I'm thinking about one hundred and fifteen, although feel free to make an offer, as I really don't have much of an idea. :) Pick-up from the CBD only.

Does anyone else find their IBS worsens if they don't eat enough/feel hungry?
Usually I avoid dairy/wheat (dairy and proper fibrey stuff being my biggest trigger!)
I've been fairly ok for the past couple of years now, but a couple of times recently it's played up REALLY badly and it's usually when I feel hungry! On Friday at work I forgot to eat brekkie, about half way through the morning I started to feel a bit unwell so I quickly stuffed a piece of cake & a chocolate bar. After about an hour my IBS had me in crippling pain on the toilet :( and every since my stomach feels so 'jumpy' I'm constantly scared something will set it off!
Similarly, at the start of June I didn't eat breakfast- my boyfriend had stayed round and instead we ate a packet of buttery rich shortbread between us! I got the funny/hungry type feelings about 11am and by half 2 was on the loo in crippling pain :( Felt I couldn't leave the cubicle!! Arghhh.
The horrible thing is this morning I've had 2 slices wheat free toast and a packet of crisps and I still feel STARVING and weird...
Advice/experiences from anyone? I'm in such a worry that it's all coming back!

"Nowadays, ten months after the financial crisis came crashing in on the United Arab Emirates (UAE), nearly destroying its shiniest component, Dubai, hundreds of cranes and dredgers have yet to resume work. The Queen Elizabeth II, once the world’s smartest liner, due to become yet another posh Dubai hotel, is a sleeping quayside hulk. Nothing is happening on three of the most recently man-made islands shaped like palm trees off Dubai’s coast that were the latest flashy projects of Nakheel, the emirate’s shaky real-estate developer."
